Food was interesting. We tried the fried lily buds with water chestnuts, fried beef, garlic prawns, and a thick soup. The dishes were on the salty side so when we asked for reduced salt, the thick soup came tasteless which we found so amusing. The ambience was great. The entrance was hard to find though
Interesting traditional decor. Food is ok. Service has a lot of room for improvement.
The facade & entrance were unpretentious. Once entered, we realised the place was full! We had to queue for a good 20 minutes before being seated. The wait was worth it due to their braised pork. We ordered garlic prawn, vegetable, the signature braised pork & a bottles of red (Great Wall, produced in China). Garlic Prawn was ok, good recipe actually, but prawns weren't fresh. Vege was OK, a bit too salty to my taste. The braised pork, oh my! The skin was thick, the fat was fresh & aromatic (didn't taste oily at all!), meat juicy & succulent! It was so good we decided to order another one! For the wine, we wanted to get the reserva, unfortunately it was out of stock, so we settled for the 3 years old red, which turned out to be very drinkable table wine, & very reasonably priced for the quality. Hope to visit Suzhou & this restaurant again in the future for more of these killer pork! The restaurant takes reservation, so next time I will book in advance to avoid queuing. Service in this restaurant ranged from so-so to good, depending on the staff members.
We spent a weekend in Suzhou and enjoyed the PingJiang pedestrian area. There we found this restaurant serving local food. We ordered many different plates from soup and noodles to vegetables and fish and pork and much more and we shared them all with our friends according to the nice local habit. All dishes are fresh and delicious. Absolutely recommended. The name in Chinese is 鱼食饭稻土灶館, this should help you find it.
