Located in the vibrant heart of Melbourne's Chinatown, Shanghai Street is a beloved eatery renowned for its authentic Chinese cuisine, particularly its mouthwatering dumplings. The restaurant's charm lies in its bustling atmosphere, where diners often find themselves in a lively queue, menu in hand, eagerly anticipating a table. This is my second visit, serves the best dumplings I have ever had. There is usually a line out front. Arrived at about 640pm on a Wednesday. Had about 5 to 10min wait. In the queue you get a menu and can pre-order. My last trip was with a large group and the peanut satay dumplings are a must. Tonight I went solo. Ordered #5 pan fried pork buns, #80 stir fried vegetables jasmine tea. About $43 all up. Both dishes were absolutely awesome. I put my leftovers into a 50cent container and left full. Staff are very efficient and very busy. Don't expect a friendly, overly helpful, talkative group. Expect a team working crazy hard to keep up with the demand. The space is a bit like a hole in the wall. It's a little dirty in the corners. The chairs are a bit old, the leather material on the chairs is a bit ripped. The tables are a bit old. But... the food is that good, it just doesn't matter. I fully understand why they are so busy and so excited to go again.
Great atmosphere in Melbourne China Town. The services and foods are worth to visit. Specially in the evening those lanterns are lit up the whole streets and very mesmerised. Good system while waited on the queue for the table you can browse through the menu and ordered, when the table is ready your food is ready too. Pretty impress, fast and efficient and all season well and tasty. Definitely highly recommended and will return for more#
Excellent dinner here on the weekend. We shared a spicy chicken & peanut dish, 12 steamed vegetable dumplings, and jasmine tea. I love the system, and the atmosphere here. You decide what you want to order whilst in the queue awaiting your table. Advised that it may be a 30 minute wait, we were seated within 10 minutes. Delicious food, generous serves. The three of us left satisfied for less than $70.
Really great tasting dumplings and authentic food. We ate in and the table service was efficient and fast. Great taste and great value.
