What an awesome tasting dinner at Julep by the Riel Chef. I have always loved Julep, but the tasting dinner was a nice touch. Great food, great drinks and great place to be. The steak at the end was overdone but everything else was on point. The shrimp were tender and not over cooked. The tartar was an absolute star with the dill and spices. I had a great time and my only complaint was the steak. Still great!!!
We had a reservation made weeks in advance, but the only place they could put our group was at the bar. That made it very difficult to share appetizers and even talk to each other. I think the experience might have been better if we had been seated. The food was good and the bar tender appeared to have made wonderful drinks but we left as soon as we could to go elsewhere.
First rate service, ambiance, and food quality. All of us were first timers here and they sat us down at the front table in a cozy nook area next to the big windows looking out into the streets of Richmond. We were excited to sample upscale southern cuisine and we did not come away disappointed. Our appetizers were fried green tomatoes and deviled eggs, both of which came with a bit of spicy kick. This complemented the warm cornbread that was gratuitously placed on our plates. Two of us ordered the restaurant’s mainstay dish, Shrimp and Grits, and really enjoyed it. 5 colossal shrimps surrounding the mound of grits and sausages and aromatic sauces. The rockfish daily catch of the day also was expertly prepared, laid upon a bed of spinach and potatoes. Service was so attentive. Great selection of wines and beverages, and we order glasses of white (from Spain) and red wine (Argentina). There is a paid parking lot behind the restaurant.
Excellent food! I had the fried green tomatoes which were the best I have had in a very long time!! The portion was generous, the aioli and the pimento cheese really made the dish! The she-crab soup was outstanding - very rich and full of crab. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the food and timed the orders perfectly. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice.
