Have done several one star restaurants both in Chicago and other cities, and now having an experience at Alinea I think I can finally articulate what the difference between a one star and a three star. The food itself was well presented, paced, and was an excellent experience across all senses. We did a wine pairing and also enjoyed the selection along with the personal service from the house sommelier. Atmosphere was excellent as well, while there are a good number of seats everything is segmented into small clusters of tables. Room is dimly lit and general noise level is nice. Where things really stand out is the service, silverware promptly changed, plates collected; staff were both friendly and incredibly attentive. This is really where you get the difference between a one and a three star - food may be the same level of presentation and quality, but the staff really shine. I think my only complaint would be timing & seating. Personally I enjoy when a group of tables is timed to be seated together. This not only makes the experience feel a bit more shared, and preserves the surprise for each dish. It doesn't detract much from the overall experience and I think if they went this route it might make maintaining the level of service they have challenging. Absolutely would return again in the future.
My wife and I went here for our anniversary. I would recommend Alinea to anyone. If you are thinking if it is worth the money, it is. Not only is it a lot of food, but everything we tried was amazing and has so much thought and creativity put onto it. The food alone was worth it but the atmosphere and hospitality was a 10/10. Also, it’s not just dinner, it’s a show. I don’t want to ruin the surprise on any of that.
Its atmosphere full of aromas, music, and warmth led you to enjoy the incredible and successful selection of food. Excellent service.
The food and staff were fantastic, but what differentiated Alinea from other restaurants was the performance. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I won't go into detail, but there were a few events during the dining session.
