I ventured out to Virgil's with a couple work colleagues and enjoyed the visit. Here's the scoop: The place is smaller than I expected but causal-nice. Jorge was our server and attended to our every needs. The menu is soul food with a twist, so you'll find ties to a traditional soul food menu (fried chicken, wings, smothered pork chops, mac n cheese, collards, etc.). That said, you'll find twists and turns along the way that make this spot a bit more unique. Some people will like the twists, and other folks will find it a distraction. I thought it worked well and would recommend it. We started with cornbread muffins, which were absolutely light and incredible. For the meal, I went with the fried chicken wings, which came with mac n cheese and collard greens. I added a side of sweet potatoes. To be honest, I'd rate the wings and mac at a 3, with the sweet potatoes a 3.5 and collards a 4.5. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor in both the chicken and mac, but the rest of the meal was more impressive. There were other things on the menu I'd like to try, so because the service and vibe were great, I'd return to give the other entrees a shot. Hopefully not on another cold day...because it feels like the entire restaurant feels a draught when that front door opens!
My company reserved the upstairs dining area for a dinner event…Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar did not disappoint! My colleagues and I (40 people) were thoroughly pleased with the ambience, food, desserts, drinks, and service! Everyone and everything was amazing! It was also a pleasure working with Gregory. He was great with communication, follow-ups, and updates for booking the space + setting a menu for our event. I look forward to dining at Virgil’s more frequently and hosting more events here.
Don't ask why when visiting Atlanta we decided to try a Gullah restaurant but we're glad we did! Amazing food. Good vibes (the music was on point, but if you like a quiet restaurant this isn't one!) Friendly, welcoming and attentive staff. Would absolutely come back. My one suggestion for improvement: the sweet tea is TOO sweet and the water it's made with has a little aftertaste, kind of chloriney. I definitely wouldn't order that again. My favourite dishes were the cornbread (so, so good!), the shrimp and grits and the crab cakes but everybody enjoyed their meal. The fried green tomatoes weren't really for me.
The bartender was great. The food was horrible, and fried cabbage severely under cooked. Also, I went for the fried green tomatoes did not have, nor did they have fired okra.
