I was very excited to for my visit to Hunan as they idea of not choosing the dishes you would eat was very appealing to me. It was an interesting concept and the restaurant is in a really nice part of London so the walk there was very pleasant. It is an expensive restaurant so you expected a certain level of quality of service, and I can say that, for us, the service was exceptional. The food was also delicious and overall I had a wonderful time. However, for the restaurant price point, the presentation was lacking. Tattered menus and poorly presented dishes that you could find at much cheaper restaurants, that was not what I was expecting. The restaurant was established in 1982 and it honestly feels like it hasn't been updated since then. Presentation really would go a long way with this restaurant because the food is good. A little more care with the plating process and some new menus would make a world of difference here. If you have the money and you just want a relaxing evening of minimal decision making, excellent service, and good food, then Hunan is lovely. If there was an update on the presentation, I would definitely try it again. If you are looking to make a loved one feel special or you want to impress a client, there are better places in London, even if you want a more reserved and relaxed vibe.
An Unforgettable Dining Experience at Hunan. Hunan is an absolute gem! From the moment we walked into the bright and welcoming atmosphere, we knew we were in for something special. What sets Hunan apart is their unique approach to dining, no à la carte menu. Instead, the servers took the time to discuss our preferences, dislikes, and any dietary restrictions before tailoring the dishes just for us. This bespoke experience made the evening feel truly personal and refined. The food was simply outstanding. Every dish was a perfect blend of flavours, textures, and creativity. We were continually surprised and delighted with the variety of courses that just kept coming, each one excellent in its own right. The attention to detail and commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients were evident in every bite. The staff were warm, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. They guided us through the experience with enthusiasm and genuine care, making us feel like honoured guests. Hunan is more than just a meal; it’s an adventure in flavour, a celebration of creativity, and a lesson in impeccable service. If you’re in London and want a dining experience like no other, this is the place to be. We’ll certainly be back for more!
Disappointing Experience – Poor Value for Money I was genuinely excited for the multi-course tasting menu at Hunan (£70 per person, 1:15 pm booking), but unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. For the price, I anticipated a satisfying and memorable experience, but I left feeling rushed, underwhelmed, and dissatisfied. The portion sizes were small, in my opinion. For the main course, two duck legs were shredded and served to five adults with wrappers. What would happen for a table of four—two duck legs too? At £70 per person, this is not right. The dessert was another disappointment: banana fritters accompanied by small scoops of ice cream served in the middle of the table for sharing. We didn’t even get one scoop each. Even the water felt overpriced at £5 per carafe, with no transparency on whether it was bottled or tap water, as no bottle was brought to the table. The most glaring issue was how rushed the entire meal felt. Courses were brought out in very quick succession leaving no time to savour the dishes. When I asked for a slower pace, I was told the kitchen closed at 2:30 pm. If this were the case, it should have been communicated at the time of booking. Rushing diners during a tasting menu defeats the purpose of the experience, which is meant to be leisurely and enjoyable. For a total cost of £389.50 for 5 of us, I expected far more. The lack of portion size, poor pacing, and overall rushed atmosphere left me feeling disappointed. This experience fell far short of the standard one would expect for a multi-course tasting menu at this price point.
We chose this restaurant for our friends 25th anniversary, we wanted somewhere very special. The first impression was a bit worrying, the table was quite tight and the chairs weren’t the quality you would expect in this price range of restaurant. HOWEVER once the food started coming we were all blown over, the taste, variety and quantity. Don’t eat all day before coming- incredible experience
