One of the best tradition Chinese restaurants in the area , always a friendly welcome and chat with the owner. Wholesome traditional meals . Great wine selection, and lovely veg options

I’ve eaten at the Red Chamber a handful of times over the years. Their food is always tasty and the portion sizes are decent. The service today was average despite the restaurant being practically empty. The venue is a little dark inside and I think it’s busier at night. Today, I was disappointed by the overall eating experience. It won’t be on top of my list for venues when I next visit Hyde Park.

The Red Chamber is consistently good. Went for lunch with friends and had Peking duck (which we ordered the day before to make sure it would be available) It was delicious! As it is a lot of food we only had the Peking Duck. The pancakes were done to perfection and it was fun to fill our own little wraps with the plum sauce, shredded spring onion and cucumber sticks. A special mention to the way the drinks are served at The Red Chamber, we ordered red wine by the glass and a Gin and Tonic. The wine was brought to the table in its original bottle so we could see that it was exactly what we'd ordered, it is then poured into a carafe so one can monitor it as you please, and ever so slightly chilled so that it was perfect on a hot day. The tot of gin came in a small glass with the tonic on the side so that again one can see exactly what you are getting. No cutting corners! We ended our meal with vanilla icecream and chopped ginger in syrup - a perfect palette cleanser. The staff were friendly and helpful and paid attention when they needed to. All in all a good experience, thank you Red Chamber!!

Went for late lunch/early dinner. Ordered prawn toast for starter and half Peking duck and a prawn dish for mains. The duck main is just under R400 on its own. Prawn toast was good. After that we had no service . Our waitress went for lunch apparently and marked our main as “will call when ready” and then forgot about us. Prawn dish came out eventually and was not hot - got sent back. We ran out of patience and went inside to pay for what we had consumed. We found our waitress and the rest of the staff (about 6 of them) chilling at a table not giving a toss about their customers. Other angry customers started complaining as well. We went somewhere else for our mains. Another pricey restaurant about to close because its staff have no work ethic.
