Shinkawa, located in the vibrant city of Osaka, Japan, offers a unique izakaya experience that captivates both locals and travelers alike. With a cozy atmosphere and a welcoming spirit, this restaurant stands out for its delicious Japanese and seafood cuisine. Many diners have praised the freshness of the sashimi and the rich flavors of the grilled meats. While the menu may not feature English translations, the attentive staff, especially Yuji, are known for their patience in guiding guests through the dining experience. Overall, it’s a place where culinary delights meet the local culture, making it a memorable stop for any food lover visiting Osaka.

One star because it appears the people running this place are racist. This izakaya refused me and my wife because we are not Japanese. We were told it is closed but we can see people eating and drinking. Non Japanese should just ignore this place.
Good food excellent service. No English menu but Yuji (waiter) was patient enough to help us order. Ok wine list but limited to what Yuji could share with us.
I visit Osaka for work several times each year. I’d always wanted to try this place. Apparently it’s open late (5am?) and many times I’ve arrived around 11pm or midnite. The lady behind the bar would give me the crossed arms / ‘closed’ sign, and I understood that to mean they were closing up early. Last time, I arrived earlier in the evening and got the same crossed arms. There were many other people in the restaurant. While I was standing there, some other people were seated as they walked in. I finally realized the reason I am getting the ‘closed’ sign is because I am a white foreigner! I had no idea racism existed to this level in Japan. I have been here many times, and I speak a little Japanese (enough to order food and get around). I always do my best to be respectful of the culture of the country I am visiting, as I spend two weeks out of the month in Asia. Sure, there is racism in my country too- but nowhere close to this. Imagine an Asian person walking into a restaurant in the USA or Canada and the bartender telling them they will not serve them, but they will serve the white customers! I had no idea this attitude existed in Japan. I’d always been so impressed with many things in Japanese society, but this was quite a lesson. With all the perceived kindness throughout the country, it’s hard to believe a business can so overtly racist in 2023. Lesson learned!
My girlfriend and I went here while trying to get over our jet lag! It’s is incredible, no English menus but some very helpful staff. We went for a bit of a lucky guess on the food, it was worth it! The sashimi was so fresh and the meats were delicious! A must for any travellers looking for a late night bite!
