I was quite disappointed and comforted myself by saying that the chef might have changed.
This is Absofu*#*lutely a must visit restaurant here in zhengzhou, the food is amazing, the price is convenient, the staff and the owners are just friendly and cheerful.
Living abroad in China, I love the seeking out comfort foods from home that make this all worth it. From hidden craft breweries to unlisted taquerias, the hunt is part of the experience, making that first sip or last bite all the more delicious. This was the case with Zax's BBQ, located in Zhengzhou, which might have been the greatest find yet, as not only was it the best Barbecue in China, but I'd even put it up against anything coming outta the Dirty South! As is the case with a lot of culinary opportunities here, I was told about this place from a friend in the F&B industry in Shenzhen. Going to Zhengzhou for a work assignment, I couldn't believe my luck that located in this nonremarkable city was some Southern US BBQ. Reaching out through WeChat, I contacted Zach, the owner, who was both helpful and welcoming, supporting me with directions and menu recommendations. Arriving on a lowkey rainy Dragon Boat Festival Monday evening, I met the proprietor, who seated me at the bar which could have been mistaken for something in Hotlanta, not Eastern China. Real recognizing real, we talked beer, baseball, and BBQ, like I was chillin' with an old friend with similar interests. I ordered the BBQ Combo Platter "For 2" even though I was just "1" and like a professional, handled it, pairing my bites with pints of Chinese craft brew. From the perfect char on the ribs to the surprisingly absoulutelychronicllyamazing chicken drumsticks, the food was straight up off the hook! One of my sides was Cornbread, which, because he knows what's up, Zach brought out some melted honey-butter to dip in, because, who uses a knife at a BBQ joint? The entire process, from hearing about this place a few weeks ago in Shenzhen to my last bite of Apple Pie à la mode in a portal to Georgia in Zhengzhou, Zax BBQ has to rank near the top of my list of dining experiences in China. It stands alone, not because it isn't Chinese food, but because it is the simply the best at what it is: American Barbecue!
